BLACKBURN PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

HIGHLY COMMENDED: J.T. ROSS (PTY) LTD & DEVRU CONSTRUCTION JV, BLACKBURN PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE & WALKWAY

The Blackburn Pedestrian Bridge and Walkway are new facilities constructed over and adjacent to the N2/26 between the informal settlement of Blackburn and the Umhlanga new town, north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. The project is intended to eliminate the unsafe use of the N2 carriageways as a pedestrian route between the two areas. Works included the construction of a 177,5m long pedestrian bridge over the N2 at km 6,025, new lay-byes on both carriageways in the vicinity of the bridge and improvements to the pedestrian pathway leading to the western end of the bridge. A 1,5km long concrete paved and protected walkway along the eastern side of the SBC was also constructed along with widening of the existing Flanders Grade Separation (subway), approximately 330m to the south of the pedestrian bridge
