WINNER: AVENG GRINAKER-LTA ENZA JOINT VENTURE, BRIDGE CITY RAIL COMMUTER STATION
Situated in Kwa Mashu north of Durban, it consists of a concourse on the lower shopping level with the station platform located underneath the Bridge City Shopping Centre. The basic concrete construction of the concourse and railway tunnel was built as part of the initial Bridge City Shopping Centre contract. The concourse includes public areas with speed gates controlling commuters, public toilets, ticket, administrative and security offices.
The tunnel consists of two platforms with rail track on concrete track slabs on either side, i.e. four tracks with a concrete dividing wall in between the two sections. Escalators, staircases and lifts connect the concourse to the station platforms under the centre.
This project represents the first time in South Africa that Vitreous enamel wall paneling has been used on the sides of a station tunnel, as used in underground stations in London. It's also the first time in South Africa that Capco curved clip on slatted aluminum ceilings have been specified, the extent being approximately 12000m². The floor and wall tiling to the concourse and the platforms are approximately 14000 m².

HIGHLY COMMENDED:GIURICICH COASTAL PROJECTS PTY LTD, AYOBA COLD STORAGE
The clients brief was to maximize the frozen storage capacity including possible future extensions without compromising vehicle logistics. Council and traffic requirements added to the challenge. Bulk earthworks necessitated major plant equipment such as excavators, bull dozers and articulated dump trucks. In the main, a telescope handler with a 16m boom extension was used on site for most of the contract period, this in addition to Bobcats, TLB's and mobile crane. The end result was a high volume state of the art cold storage facility.
