Panorama Gardens

WINNER/KHONASTONE PROJECTS CC - PANORAMA GARDEN

The construction methods used on this project is all largely typical in the industry, where they differ, is that the extras (offered as standard) is not typical of the affordable housing market segment. As a consequence, the major difficulties encountered were economical; keeping costs down and standards up was a constant challenge.

The units are built on previously cut platforms. The geotechnical conditions necessitate that the foundations were founded a metre below the ground level.

The units have pad and column foundations, incorporating a reinforced steel ring-beam, culminating in a raft slab thickened and reinforced under internal walls. This method is more cost effective and faster than deep strip footings. Khonastone modified the beam to accommodate a nib onto which face brick plinth can be built.

The walls are constructed from standard cement blocks and plastered. The roofs are double roman cement tiles on a Mitek designed truss structure. The floors are of a good quality ceramic tile, chosen by the client in accordance with a given budget, as are the bedroom carpets.

Goals and objectives were achieved through an intense level of supervision of all the works.

Addington Primary School

HIGHLY COMMENDED: STEFANUTTI STOCKS BUILDING KZN - ADDINGTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

Stefanutti Stocks Building KZN, in terms of their culture of Corporate Social Responsibility, decided to embark on a project to build a new classroom block at Addington Primary. This was in conjunction with the client Exeter Holdings, Elphick Proome Architects and Goba Structural Engineers who made up the balance of the professional team. They along with the main contractor, a host of subcontractors as well as suppliers, either donated or discounted their services.
The R16million contract began in June 2011 and was completed in October 2011. The intention was to create a practical yet aesthetically pleasing building to predominantly house the Grade R department which was previously not catered for, as the school is largely dependent on diminishing government funding and capital development funding is restricted. The existing soccer field was also completely refurbished including regrading and grassing.
