WINNER: HILTON GATES
The scope of work for the project was the infrastructure development for the residential estate, The Gates, which neighbours the school Hilton College. The establishment of roads with storm water throughout the estate from the entrance through to each property was the key focus as principle contractor. The building of a pump house, boundary walls and then the guard house which is a feature at the entrance, with installation of sewerage, water mains and electricity cables being sub-contracted out.
The challenges overcome on the project were major earthworks during the rainy seasons, blasting for water mains and the moving of pumps at the request of environmental consultants. The delay of the Eskom connection required the contractor to hire a generator for the final handover of the project.

HIGHLY COMMENDED: BRIDGE CITY RAIL LINK
Bridge City Rail Link entailed the construction of a new 2.7km rail link from Duffs Road Station to Bridge City Station in Kwa-Mashu. The major disciplines included the construction of mass earthworks, 3 viaducts (totaling 518m) and rail infrastructure.
The Malandela & Kwa-Mashu viaducts were designed with a prestressed beam and slab type deck. For the construction of “fluted” wall type piers and bullnose capping beam, purpose made steel formwork incorporating triangular panels to reflect the changing shape of the piers had to be designed and manufactured by Peri. The prestressed beams used for the deck were 2.0m deep, ranging from 20m to 32m in length and weighing between 50 & 80 tons. For the landing of the beams over Malandela Viaduct, detailed rigging studies and traffic accommodation plans had to stand on the existing roadway. To minimize disruption to traffic, this work was carried out over a weekend.
The Piesangs Viaduct also provided the JV team with a number of challenges. Being located in a floodplain meant careful planning had to be done to ensure work areas remained safe and secure during periods of rain
