The Project and Construction Management Professions Act (No. 48 of 2000) informs us that CPD is a compulsory condition for the renewal and maintenance of professional registration in all categories of professional registration.
In order to achieve CPD objectives, the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) has the following requirements:
- That all CPD delivery methods are designed and focused on bringing out a high level of professionalism, ethical standards, integrity and competence and relevant industry work experience in all registered professionals.
- That high-quality input methods (including mentorship, lecturing, facilitating workshops, conferences, congresses, seminars and any other methods of delivery of professional development that are deemed appropriate by Council on-the-job training, ongoing industry and professional practice, etc) be applied throughout the CPD process.
- Output-based approach – emphasis is placed on the need for innovativeness, skills growth, deeper and specialised knowledge acquisition, attainment of high levels of professional competence and acquisition of practical and relevant work experience amongst professionals within the construction sector.
- Non-cumbersome process – requires that CPD processes and activities be well articulated in such a way that they can easily be followed or undertaken.
Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal is proud to announce that a key member of the Association’s Membership Services team, Health and Safety Manager Neil Enslin, has been appointed to the SACPCMP Continuing Professional Development Committee.
In the Midlands Area, the Association had a positive meeting with the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business with a view to formulating a partnership in the training of unemployed youth in disciplines where skills are scarce. Skills shortage is a serious threat to the long-term sustainability of the industry and the Association remains committed to advancing skills development.
In Zululand a number of safety audits were concluded in October. It is interesting to note that there are ongoing requests by members in the Zululand area for star grading assessments. Many big manufacturers require a minimum three-star grading safety compliance from their contractors.
Members are reminded that Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) developed the National Star Grading system and tailored it specifically for the Construction Industry. Members that are in good standing with the Association as well as having registered their employees for workmen's compensation can verify to potential clients that they are OHS legally compliant, by having their current projects Star Graded by the Association free of charge. An advantageous star grading on one project, can be used as an effective marketing ploy when quoting on another, and members are encouraged to take advantage of it.
In Northern Natal, the placement of Majuba TVET college students with members has been welcomed. It is proving to be a win-win scenario as the students are gaining valuable experience and members are enjoying having the extra assistance.
Members are reminded that in November 2018, there are a number of year-end member meetings planned across the KZN Province, the dates are as follows:
• Zululand: 8 November 2018
• Northern: Natal 9 November 2018
• Durban: 14 November 2018
• Midlands: 22 November 2018
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to celebrate the festive season with us, while networking with your colleagues in the industry. We look forward to seeing you.
