An interview is defined as a procedure designed to obtain information from a person through a face-to-face or telephonic interaction. The interview procedure is a crucial part of the recruitment process because it identifies the best candidate for a position within an organisation. There is a great deal that can go wrong during this process such as hiring the wrong candidate based on incorrect questions. This can be costly for the organisation. Therefore, employers should acquire key interview skills.
Types of Interview Skills:
Interviews conducted over the phone
The interview conducted over the phone is usually the first step of the interview process. It gives the employer the opportunity to determine if the candidate is the right fit for the job. The following tips can be used when conducting an interview over the phone:
- Plan: Create a set of suitable interview questions. From these, the interviewer may ask more probing questions.
- Appointment: For planning purposes, it is best to schedule an appropriate timeslot to conduct an interview.
- Research: Assess the candidate’s curriculum vitae and qualifications in detail and note key points.
- Give the candidate a chance to ask questions.
- Inform the candidate of the next step of the interview process.
Interviews conducted face-to-face
The face-to-face interview is usually the second step of the interview process. During this engagement, the employer will ascertain if the candidate is suitable for the position by evaluating the candidate’s behavioural traits, attitude and whether they will be able to fit into the culture of the organisation. The interview questions should be based on the candidate’s job knowledge, experience and behavioural attributes. Questions should be consistent, open-ended and unambiguous.
Interviews conducted over video platforms
Organisations widely utilise video platforms to conduct virtual interviews. This process is useful when candidates are based in different geographical locations. The following tips can be used during video interviews:
- Test the technology: Ensure that the camera, sound, computer, and connectivity are suitable. Test the technology before commencing the interview.
- Instructions: Provide instructions to the candidate before commencing the interview. This can be done using the message feature on the video platform.
- Record the interview: Inform the candidate that the interview will be recorded and obtain consent from the candidate to proceed with the recording. Recording the interview allows the employer to analyse the interview in detail at a later stage before making an offer.
