Construction Industry News and Views         Edition 175                         07 October 2019

Dear Members and Readers

The Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) Congress saw various industry stakeholders engaged in collaborative resolutions aimed at taking the industry forward. The recent months have presented a bleak outlook for the industry and it cannot be business as usual. The MBSA research coupled with the Congress Resolutions is designed to pave the way for construction industry stakeholders to dig deep to implement turnaround strategies for the industry. It is common cause that the impact of an ailing industry will have severe social and economic consequences for an already strained economy.

In this edition, we note several engagements with industry stakeholders across the Province. There has been ongoing discussion around amendments to building agreements. It has surfaced that any amendments to the agreement should be recorded in an Annexure to the agreement. Members are reminded that the Association launched a Dispute Resolution and Arbitration unit. We also assist with access to social facilitation services. These are designed to assist our members to overcome challenges and resolve disputes speedily. The Association also drafted a model OHS Bill of Quantities which is made available in this edition.

The Master Builders Occupational Health Clinic has teamed up with Medi Logistics and is now a pick-up point for chronic medication. For patient privacy, or simply for convenience, you can arrange with your Doctor to collect your chronic medication at 40 Essex Terrace, Westville. Please note that this service is only available by arrangement with your Doctor through medical aid.

The Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal Annual Awards event will once again take place at Durban’s premier ICC venue on 18 October 2019 where excellence in construction and health and safety will be celebrated. The theme for this year’s event is “Building Cultural Diversity” and delegates are encouraged to dress accordingly. The entertainment planned for the night is nothing short of sensational with a line-up that includes the Nateshwar Dance Academy, Elite Musica and comedy by ventriloquist Conrad Koch and his famed puppet, Chester Missing. There will be a display arena during the cocktail session with lots of vouchers and prizes up for grabs. Secure your tickets now to enjoy this KZN construction extravaganza.

Join us in congratulating our long-standing member company Enza Construction on achieving an outstanding OHS milestone.

Bill of quantities for Health and Safety

The Association was tasked to draft a standard Bill of Quantities (BOQ) for Health and Safety that can be used by members for this purpose. The Association must stress that the client may draft their own BOQ to be used for tendering purposes, however in the absence of such, the Association would urge its members to request that the attached BOQ schedule be used for this purpose. By doing so, it will prevent contractors from under budgeting for health and safety.
