Construction Industry News and Views Edition 188 07 December 2020 |
Dear Members and Readers
As 2020 draws to an end, amidst all the global challenges, we can only hope that the new year brings some reprieve to buffer the challenges during this significant decade. It is not surprising to note that the Pan South African Language Board which tracks the use of words in print, broadcast and online media declared “Lockdown” as South Africa’s word of the year for 2020.
We are all aware that there has been a resurgence of the COVID-19 virus in certain parts of the country and that additional measures will be imposed in areas identified as hotspots. As such it is imperative that we heed the call to take relevant precautions and protect our workplace during this period.
The FNB/BER Building Confidence Index rose to 29 in the 4th Quarter of 2020 which reflects a steady rise in confidence over the year. The report points to an increase in residential activity and a significant rise in hardware retail sales. The FNB/BER Civil Confidence Index improved to 16 in Quarter 4 of 2020.
As we reach the end of the year, we begin prioritising matters for 2021. The Association will be moving into a new three-year strategy which is tipped to place more emphasis on improving work opportunities for our members and the sustainability of the industry.
In this last edition for 2020, we keep you updated on membership issues which include some positive news as well as warnings of possible building material shortages. As some construction sites wind down for the December period, we outline safety protocols to be enforced to safeguard your site. International Anti-Corruption Day is on 9 December and we call on all contractors to act against corruption. In the article titled “Knowledge and understanding of relevant current occupational health and safety legislation,” we delve into the importance of training on health and safety legislation. Many organisations have faced major challenges in recent times and the article “Building your perfect team” explains how to improve productivity, increase motivation and attain the perfect workforce.
At this time of the year we present to you our marketing opportunities for 2021, designed to promote your company within the influential network of Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal. Click here to download the 2021 marketing menu.
Members will be pleased to know that the Association will not be implementing a fee increase in 2021 and that we value your loyalty and continued support. The Association offices will be open for the duration of the festive season this year.
Let me take the opportunity to wish all our readers an enjoyable festive season and a more promising 2021.
Stay safe and enjoy!

Membership News
In November 2020, 15 new companies joined the Association while 3 former member companies successfully applied for membership reinstatement. The upturn in member enrolment is perhaps indicative that the construction industry is gaining some momentum. Members should however be aware that while there are some positive signs, reports of building material shortages continue to surface. Moneyweb.co.za and other reputable news sites have reported critical shortages of materials including cement, steel, bricks and timber.
